The inspiration for this magazine site came from my investigation into the differences between design for print and design for the web. It struck me that a lot of the beautiful, yet functional, visual design of magazines was being dropped when a magazine was put in online form. It either became a average ad-riddled web site crammed with content, or a mostly-unusable flash version of the printed magazine with gimmick turning pages. I wanted to create a magazine web site that kept the full-bleed imagery, exciting typography and layouts of well-designed magazines but was also a very functional, easy-to-use web site. More than anything, I did it to prove it could be done.
The theme of Save The Words was entirely inspired by the web site http://savethewords.org. I loved all these unusual and creative words, but I couldn't think of a project where I could make use of them. Then the two ideas collided and created this magazine. I finally had a theme for my print-like web magazine, and a use for these exciting words. The stunning photography was provided by Kim Hunter, who worked from a collection of the words that inspired her. I then edited and art-directed the photographs and coded the magazine itself.
I hope you enjoy it, and find a home for these words in your vocabulary!
